| "Make every day count." common saying
How do we make every day count? Perhaps it is by living from our heart, rather than from our heads so much. As humans, we can be proud of our well-developed brains. I saw a documentary of our ancestors about 2 million years ago, whose brains were about 1/3 the size of ours. But, that might cause us to over rely on our brains. We have largely lost touch with our intuition, and that is perhaps where true living arises.

This blog is written to provide information and support to persons who are providing care for someone with dementia. A first indicator of dementia is when someone has trouble doing a task once familiar and easy for them. If you have begun to be concerned about someone's memory or cognitive processing, help the person receive a physical exam, to include lab work, and an appointment with a neuropsychologist for an evaluation of memory and cognitive processing.

Importance of Exercise
| "1004 bodily changes occur after just 10 minutes of exercise." Time
This article cites research done which tells us that molecular changes, for our benefit, occur after just 10 minutes of exercise. It is better if it is regular exercise, every day. It is one of the ways we can handle the stress of life. Exercise, managing our thoughts, adequate sleep, nutritious foods -- all help us manage stress.

Being Appreciated
| "Appreciation is one of the highest vibrations one can attain." Abraham-Hicks
Last week during a bodytalk session, the practitioner began by saying, "Thank you for taking care of Dwane," I was so touched, and I realize that is the first time anyone thanked me for setting my life aside to take care of him. I did feel second-guessed, criticized and given advice, but to be thanked. That was missing.
So, I want to thank each of you for caregiving your loved one, for setting aside your own life to whatever extent was right for you, for striving to make the best decisions you could for your loved one. Thank you. Thank you so much. On behalf of the Universe, thank you for caring for another human being to the best of your ability.

To Work or Not
| "May confusion dawn as wisdom." Tibetan prayer
One decision I am pondering is whether to work or not. I closed my psychological practice for five years to provide caregiving for my loved one. Then, I opened it again to help offset the cost of longterm care, which is running about $100,000 a year currently. Now that that period is over, do I want to work? That is question.

| "It is a mistake to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time." Winston Churchill
I am surprised how many people ask me if I am going to sell our home. I know I am not functioning well enough to make a decision of that magnitude, and I think Churchill is right -- the chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time. So, for now, my time is to grieve and get on with my own life -- whatever that will look like. I feel I walk with gratitude in one hand and grief in the other. Much to be grateful for, and I have experienced a significant loss. Let us honor our losses and look for the blessings in life.

Developing as a Human
| "May I realize truth and become one with truth." Sri Ramakrishna
What does it mean to be human? We used to say it was because we used tools and other mammals and animals did not, but that has been disproved with watching ravens, chimpanzees and other animals. So, what does make us human? Perhaps it is our capacity to be introspective, although there is no prove that animals are not also introspective. Whatever the purpose, I find comfort in discerning what is truth for me and what connects me with all other life.

Bodytalk
| "Pine and fir trees and flowing water emit more negative ions than almost anything else and being around them is a great support for health."Dr. John Veltheim
I am not sure I have ever written about Bodytalk, a systematic health system created by Dr. John Veltheim. I first became aware of it about 4 years ago, and I have had the opportunity to see how it can dramatically support the body's natural ability to heal. If you would like more information about Bodytalk,

John Veltheim gave a public lecture on The BodyTalk Experience. The recording of that event is now available for your viewing pleasure by clicking here! |
