"Study suggests brain's defense systems against infections may be cause of dementia." NY Times, May 26, 2016
Studies at Harvard suggest that virus, fungus or bacterium may pass through the membrane into the brain, and the plaque found in dementia may be the body's attempt to isolate and kill those invaders. What an incredible suggestion. The article says that dementia is decreasing (that has not been my personal observation), and the reason for that may be the better control of infections. Fascinating. This research is worth following.

This blog is written to provide information and support to persons who are providing care for someone with dementia. A first indicator of dementia is when someone has trouble doing a task once familiar and easy for them. If you have begun to be concerned about someone's memory or cognitive processing, help the person receive a physical exam, to include lab work, and an appointment with a neuropsychologist for an evaluation of memory and cognitive processing.
