To sleep. Perchance to dream." Shakespeare Last night I awakened at 2:12 from a powerful dream. I dreamed I was in a concentration camp and was married to a cruel, destructive and cowardly man. In the dream I was trying to avoid his violence and destruction. Upon awakening, I realize that the dream represents what dementia was for me. It is cruel, destructive and cowardly; and I spent a lot of time as caregiver trying to avoid getting caught in its clutches along with my loved one. I share this intimate dream because I think it is instructive in how deeply into our subconscious we are affected by the disease of dementia and the role of caregiving. |
This blog is written to provide information and support to persons who are providing care for someone with dementia. A first indicator of dementia is when someone has trouble doing a task once familiar and easy for them. If you have begun to be concerned about someone's memory or cognitive processing, help the person receive a physical exam, to include lab work, and an appointment with a neuropsychologist for an evaluation of memory and cognitive processing.
