"Doctors know that Alzheimer's begins years before memory and confusion symptoms become evident." Alice Park
Doctors now say that substances in saliva may signal the first signs of mild cognitive impairment, which often leads to Alzheimer's. Two drugs that soak up the amyloid plaques that are indicative of Alzheimer's show promise. Women with mild cognitive impairment decline twice as past as men, which might explain why more women than men have Alzheimer's. How well you did in school can be a good indicator of whether you will have Alzheimer's later in life, as the cognitive reserve created by the development of intellectual skills seems protective.

This blog is written to provide information and support to persons who are providing care for someone with dementia. A first indicator of dementia is when someone has trouble doing a task once familiar and easy for them. If you have begun to be concerned about someone's memory or cognitive processing, help the person receive a physical exam, to include lab work, and an appointment with a neuropsychologist for an evaluation of memory and cognitive processing.
