"The word radical comes from the Latin radix, meaning "root". It refers to going deep." Matthew Fox
Matthew Fox has continued to go deep, after being expelled from the Catholic Church, partly for insisting God is both feminine and masculine and partly for saying we have an original blessing, rather than original sin. Courageous. It is courageous for anyone to speak his/her truth in face of opposition. That is what we as caregivers do. We ask staff to go into the hallucinating with our loved one, rather than arguing and correcting. We ask everyone to treat our loved one with love and respect. We go visit -- it would be far easier to find a reason to not go to the nursing home. We go deep: to be caregivers in a way that provides dignity and respect for our loved ones and ourselves.

This blog is written to provide information and support to persons who are providing care for someone with dementia. A first indicator of dementia is when someone has trouble doing a task once familiar and easy for them. If you have begun to be concerned about someone's memory or cognitive processing, help the person receive a physical exam, to include lab work, and an appointment with a neuropsychologist for an evaluation of memory and cognitive processing.
